The two companies said they will develop system-on-chip modules for a super component” design, which will cut the cost, reduce power consumption, and speed production of products for Bluetooth links between PCs, cellular phones, other handheld units, and computer peripherals. Lucent and Sweden's LM Ericsson cited market projections from Cahners In-Stat Group, which expects over 670 million Bluetooth-enabled devices to be shipped worldwide by 2005.

We want to help people get their views to Congress,” said Roy Beck, director of NumbersUSA.com. We know American workers don't have much of a voice in Congress. The people who hold sway have large amounts of money.”

Flextronics International Ltd. plans to beef-up its acquisition funds with a secondary public offering of 5.5 million shares and $450 million in senior subordinated notes.

Flextronics, a contract electronics manufacturer with headquarters in Singapore, granted financial advisors an option to purchase up to an additional 825,000 shares to cover any over-allotments. Company executives said they plan to use the offering's net proceeds to pay for further business expansion, including capital expenditures, additional working capital, and general corporate purposes.

Last month, Flextronics inked an outsourcing agreement with Motorola Inc. worth $30 billion over five years.

According to IMS Research, lower-tier handsets will be the recipients of Bluetooth ICs from now through 2013 as average selling prices fall more than 40% over that period.

Technology has improved and economies of scale increased sufficiently to erode Bluetooth prices. Handset manufacturers, especially at the lower end, will benefit greatly.

According to IMS, the increased penetration of Bluetooth technology in handsets will help the market as Bluetooth IC suppliers will be able to compensate for lower revenues once they begin producing higher-cost Bluetooth high-speed ICs this year. Headset shipments will also receive a boost within the growing device environment.

LOS ANGELES — A paradox in system-on-chip design is emerging, according to a panel held Wednesday (June 7) at the Design Automation Conference. While more designs are expected to differentiate by relying on software rather than hardware, pressure on power consumption is forcing designers to reconsider the hardware option.

Speaking at the Future Systems-on-Chip” panel, Bob Broderson, professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, said: Software architectures are at least 100 times less efficient in power and area than hardware. That gap will increase.”

This is a new direction for our company,” Wang said. The advantages of Xtreme include its ease of use, versatility, debug-ability, and speed.”

Axis said the Xtreme verification system eliminates the need for logic analyzers by enabling RTL emulation and debugging capabilities. During the debugging phase, designers can specify a time range and extract and display emulation state history, the company said.

Axis worked with Altera Corp. and other partners to bring Xtreme to market. The tool includes Altera's Apex PLD architecture technology. Altera and Axis worked on this project for the last two years, the companies said. Axis also established an alliance with Sun Microsystems Inc. on the use of its Ultrasparc II processor.

There is a great deal of synergy between what Altera does and what Axis does,” said Erik Cleage, senior vice president of marketing for Altera (San Jose, Calif.). The emulation market offers Altera an opportunity for growth.”

According to Wang, Xtreme begins with 2.5 million ASIC gates and has a capacity of handling up to a 20 million gates. It also includes 384 Mbits of on-board system memory, and performance of 300,000-to-500,000 cycles per second.
