Xilinx (San Jose, Calif.) said it intends to oppose the appeal, which it does not expect will have a material impact on its financial statements.

BERLIN, Germany — On a press conference in the run-up to IFA consumer electronics exhibition, the Blu-ray disc association gave an overview of the present state of the technology and the vendor's roadmaps.

Van Houten said NXP would also continue with partnerships such as the R&D partnership it has with STMicroelectronics NV and Freescale Semiconductor Inc. at Crolles, France. But he also stressed that Crolles is a partnership and that the wafer fab there is not intended for high volume manufacturing.

When van Houten was asked during a telephone conference if NXP would remain as an IDM that would continue to build fabs, he answered by saying that NXP would continue to invest in existing factories and would rely on a mix of internal and external manufacturing. In the short-to-medium term NXP would outsource more of its manufacturing to foundries taking the level from 20 percent at present to 40 percent and with most of the additional outsourced manufacturing being advanced CMOS, van Houten said.

As we outsource it will primarily be in advanced CMOS until we get to level of outsourcing that is too high. We believe there is a Pareto optimization at about 40 percent, if you go beyond that you can become too dependent on suppliers,” van Houten told EE Times in a separate telephone conversation.

That would be the position at which NXP would consider forming a joint venture to bring more manufacturing, under closer control, he said. When asked how soon outsourcing would reach 40 percent and a manufacturing joint-venture might be required, van Houten said: 2009 at the earliest.”

PARIS — With a change of ownership from Royal Philips Electronics to a consortium of private equity investment companies, Philips Semiconductors will simply become NXP.
