TOKYO — Tapping the contactless Felica IC communications technology embedded in four new phones for its i-mode mobile network, NTT Docomo Inc. will launch a service next month that puts electronic money, e-tickets, personal ID and other services onto i-mode handsets. The Mobile Wallet service is intended to make the mobile phone an integral part of social and economic transactions.

The Felica IC, developed by Sony Corp. and now licensed to other chip makers by Felica Networks Inc., a joint venture of Sony and Docomo, is the underpinning of the Mobile Wallet service. Sony has developed a special version of the chip, the Mobile Felica, for mobile phone applications.

Thirty-nine companies said they will offer Mobile Wallet services, utilizing the IC that has previously been used mostly in contactless IC cards.

Money, keys and credit cards — all are in the Mobile Felica chip of a mobile phone. People can go out with just their mobile phone,” said Natsuno.

Companies that will offer Mobile Wallet services include East Japan Railway Co. (JR East), Japan's largest railway company, which adopted Felica technology in 2001 for its automated fare-collection system and has already issued 9 million contactless cards. The Felica format complies with the Cybernetics contactless IC card standard defined by Japan Railway Engineers' Association and has established itself as the de facto standard for Japan's transportation system.

Other providers of Mobile Wallet services are MasterCard, Visa, Japan Credit Bureau, All Nippon Airways, Coca-Cola Japan, Fuji Xerox and NEC.

The Mobile Felica IC is basically the same as previous Felica chips but has additional capability to communicate via a mobile phone to remote servers operated by Felica Networks. It integrates a controller, 5 kbytes of memory and an antenna. It measures 7 mm2 and comes in a 1-mm-thick package.

The two BlueGene/L systems are now configured with 8,192 and 4,096 dual-core PowerPC 440 CPUs running at IBM's T.J. Watson research lab. The systems could hit peak performance up to 300 teraflops on the Linpack benchmark when completed and installed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Clusters and x86 processors are also rapidly increasing their architectural dominance. A total of 287 of the top 500 systems are now using Intel processors.

Six months ago, the list included 189 Intel-based systems and one year ago only 119. The other most common CPUs are IBM's Power (75 systems), Hewlett-Packard's PA-RISC (57) and AMD's X86 CPUs (34).

A total of 291 of the top 500 systems are based on clusters, up from 208 in the November 2003 and 149 in the June 2003 rankings. The best known of those clusters, an Apple G5 based system at the Virginia Tech that hit No. 3 last year, fell off the current list because it is currently being upgraded to Apple's rack-mounted Xserve systems.

Moore's Law and the rise of clusters — which can be rapidly deployed or upgraded with new processors — are responsible for the record turnover of new systems in the current top 500 list, the 23rd ranking since the list started 12 years ago.
