Customers were willing to forgive the early technical problems @Home was having with caching and access, though a lot of those problems still exist,” the analyst said. But since Excite@Home came together, the combined entity has developed a terrible reputation. It tried to ban VPN (Virtual Private Network) traffic from residential customers. It gutted out its support department, so customers can't reach a human being when they have technical problems. It busted a user who tried to publish terms-of-service contracts on a Web site. Excite@Home seems to be going out of its way to alienate the customer base. AT&T Residential Broadband might be able to get around that, but it's going to have to do some fundamental rethinking about the service provider market.”

Many young people here in Israel and all the way to my teenage daughter who goes to a gifted kids high school can change their attitude, from a complacent money hungry and selfish one to a radical lets’ make a different world” one if they only had good leadership, some good examples to follow.

I think the young generation is hungry for that. One case is the Facebook revolutions in the Arab countries, all sparked by the young and led by them.

This is my two cents on the subject. I agree that I certainly didn’t know much about Steve. It was only last night that I discovered he had been adopted as a child. And if I ever knew of his relationship with Pixar and their films starting with Toy Story (the first feature-length computer animation), then I had forgotten this again long ago.

I guess that the bottom line for me is that everyone is important in one way or another, but with different spheres of influence. Think about the difference between dropping a pebble into a pool of water versus dropping a massive piece of river rock. Both will cause ripples, but the river rock’s effect will be more pronounced and will spread further and affect more things.

Similarly, most of us affect relatively few people (hopefully for the better) in the scheme of things. But a few people have more influence, and Steve Jobs was one of the very few who made ripples that have spread around the world and will continue to spread forward through time.

Just a few days ago I was sitting on the sofa using my wife’s netpad computer for something. I was getting very frustrated because it wasn’t working – I kept on pressing different fields on the webpage I was looking at and nothing happened. And then I suddenly remembered that, unlike my iPad, the netpad doesn’t have a touchscreen interface.

I feel very sad at the moment. Steve was far too young to die. I wish him well on the next stage of his journey whatever that might be…

Santa Clara, Calif. — National Semiconductor Corp. has squeezed its LM4871 bridge-connected Boomer audio amplifier into a leadless lead frame package (LLP) about half the size of the small-outline package it had been using.

Steve Kaufman, marketing manager for National's audio amplifier product group, said the new package enables the part to drive a speaker with an output of up to 2.4 watts at 3 ohms and 1 percent total harmonic distortion, and to operate from power supplies as low as 2 volts. The SOP package had limited the amplifier to 1.1 watts at 8 ohms.

For Cadence, its reported $332 million in third-quarter revenues represent a 105 percent jump in product revenue year-to-year. Cadence also announced its largest EDA purchase agreement ever, concluded with Texas Instruments Inc.

This news is in stark contrast to Cadence's revenue and stock price downturn in 1999, when it became evident that the company's flexible access model (FAM) licensing model had front-loaded revenues in prior years. We're ahead of our goals, but we don't want to get complacent,” said Bill Porter, Cadence's chief financial officer. We still have a ways to go.”

The company's latest quarterly report included $52 million in revenue from Tality Corp., the design services firm that's waiting to be spun-off from Cadence. The Tality IPO is on hold due to current market conditions.

Mentor Graphics reported third-quarter revenues of $141.9 million, up 25 percent from the third quarter of 1999. The company said it expects roughly $175 million in revenue in the fourth quarter, and is looking for $660 million in revenue for the year 2001.

Innoveda reported third-quarter revenues of $23.1 million, an increase of 70 percent over the previous year's quarter — but the 1999 results reflected only revenues from Viewlogic, not from Summit Design. Both those companies merged to form Innoveda in the past year. Meanwhile, revenues for Ikos Systems grew 36 percent year-to-year to reach $22.1 million in its recent third quarter 2000.
