A group headed by Visteon Corp., with the University of Michigan and Carnegie-Mellon University, is developing two novel systems to keep drivers from veering off the road. Under a U.S. Department of Transportation program, the group is testing a Road Departure and Crash Warning System installed in a fleet of 11 Nissan Altima test cars.

There are two features of the system, said Tim Tiernan, senior manager for driver awareness systems at Visteon (Van Buren Township, Mich.). These are a lateral-drift warning for leaving a lane or the road, and a curve overspeed function that warns if a car is going too fast heading into a curve. Each component has two levels of warning. For lateral drift, crossing a lane marker without a turn signal on gives a caution alert — a haptic vibration of the seat on the side of the drift. Crossing a solid road boundary marker generates an audible imminent” warning. Curve overspeed warns similarly, but with a vibration at the front of the seat.

For the lane departure function, camera-based lane detection is supplemented with forward and side radars. The side radar looks out to about 6.5 yards and also detects vehicles in a blind spot. The forward radar looks for objects 163 yards ahead as the camera scans for markings about 11 to 22 yards in front of the car. For safety, if the camera-located behind the windshield in the wiper arc-cannot detect any markings in rain, fog or on a dark road, the system will go into a safe” mode. No warnings will be attempted, but an indicator light on the dash will glow to alert the driver.

With future advanced systems, the driver under such marginal conditions might be given virtual road markings on a windshield HUD for guidance, Tiernan said.

The scope of information being shared also expanded to include not only CAD files but also analysis results, test specifications, quality standards, engineering requirements, change orders, bill of materials listings (BOMs), requests for quote (RFQs), manufacturing procedures and so forth.

Today's PLM solutions enable companies to manage all of the information about their products, from initial concept through to production within a single information environment that ties together all product-related information and processes across a company's value chain of customers, employees, partners and suppliers. All elements of product data (customer requirements, technical specifications, design definitions, production schedules, analysis results, sourcing plans, and quality inspections) are incorporated and tied to the critical processes and tasks undertaken by internal and external teams.
