Solectron, like many EMS companies have streamlined their operations as their customers have cancelled or pushed back orders in the current economic downturn. During the recent quarter, Solectron reported a restructuring charge of $207 million, which included the cost of plant consolidation, write- offs of property leases and workforce reductions.

In other company news, Solectron's board of directors authorizes a stock repurchase program of up to $200 million. At the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2001, Solectron had 658.3 million shares outstanding.

The core, called Bigfoot, complements Digital Communication Technologies Ltd.'s current offering, a Java and C-language CPU based on a stack architecture, known as Lightfoot.

Lightfoot has been available since 1999 as intellectual property suitable for downloading onto an FPGA. Executives at Digital Communication Technologies now expect to have a Bigfoot-based microcontroller in foundry silicon by December, and a Lightfoot microcontroller in January.

However, Digital Communication Technologies does not yet hold a license for the ARCtangent-A4, developed by ARC International plc (Elstree, England). DCT created Bigfoot for Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe GmbH (Dreieich-Buchschlag, Germany) under Fujitsu's ARC license, executives said.

A group at the Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Germany is developing a set of techniques to take high definition broadcast TV images and turn them into an immersive environment where the user can control the viewing angle and move around inside the image.

While this is being done by most researchers with 3D graphics, the group at the image processing department at HHI want to use photorealistic images for its Interactive Virtual View Video (IVVV). Their paper won the first ever President's award for best paper at the IBC conference this year.

The first version of IVVV is to take three high definition decoder boxes, that the HHI team call Hyperbox, and feed this into another box that will synchronise and merge the video images into a panoramic image. With a head mounted display, the viewer could move around the image in 2D. With three high definition projectors, this could also be 'electronic cinema', says Christoph Fehn, a researcher with the HHI group.

But the team is looking more long term than this to create a truly 3D immersive environment for IVVV based around obtaining depth data from flat images — a hefty signal processing task.
