SEOUL — South Korea's Samsung Electronics posted on Monday a drop in third-quarter net profit of 75 percent, better than forecasts as telecoms offset losses on semiconductors.

Net income for the July-September quarter fell to 420 billion won from 1.7 trillion won a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

Analysts had warned the figure could fall to as low as 100 billion won ($77.4 million).

Still, Samsung Electronics shares fell on the news, down as much as 3,500 won. They were down 500 won at 169,500 won at 9:45 p.m. EST, in line with the benchmark index down 0.22 percent.

Spot prices of mainstay 64-megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, used primarily for memory in PCs, have fallen 90 percent in the past year.

Samsung posted a loss of 380 billion won in earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) on semiconductors.

But the loss was largely offset by its information and communications business, which posted 360 billion won EBIT, up 16 percent from a year ago.

Samsung has room to absorb losses from chips as it is a diversified electronics product maker,'' said Lim Hong-bin, an analyst at Samsung Securities.

Microsoft executives and others in the industry also point out that Windows CE can be used with Java middleware. Microsoft executives also said that, even amid the growing demand for Java, many automakers and suppliers are still opting for Windows CE. The giant software maker currently has programs in the works with Bosch, Clarion, Delphi, Denso, Siemens and Visteon. European automaker Citroen has also been shipping a CE-based device, the Citroen Auto PC, for more than a year.

Over the next 10 months, another eight carmakers will roll out devices powered by Windows CE,” said Bustillos of Microsoft.

From next year, Electronics Times is to be called Electronic Engineering Times in a move to bring the UK newspaper under the global EE Times brand.

As part of the move, Electronic Engineering Times in the UK will incorporate What's New In Electronics as its weekly product guide supplement and will introduce a monthly embedded systems focus.

The technical monthly magazine Electronic Engineering will become Electronic Engineering Design from the beginning of 2002.
