EETimes: Can you talk about some of the people who have been important during your career?

Ajoy Bose : I have been very fortunate in having worked with people that I consider to be my mentors who have had significant effects, significant impact on my life, on my career.

I worked with a gentleman at Bell Labs called Hermann Gummel. He was the first recipient of the Kaufman Award. There are a few things about Hermann that rubbed off on me. First, he had an enormous work ethic. Second, Hermann was a physicist, not a trained programmer. He learned programming, but he also knew how a transistor behaved in his DNA. He would see people sitting down with different colored pens to figure out if there was a short or something that screwed up the mask. He would say, I can write a program that does that,” and off he would go.

Similarly, Hermann saw a lot of people working with Spice, which in those days had relatively small capacity and long run times. He decided that he could make some approximations, particularly with MOS devices. MOS devices are loosely coupled in that the impact of one transistor on another is less than in the case of bipolar transistors. He said, I can make some approximations, speed things up, and increase the capacity.” He came up with what became known as a timing simulator. This guy was also a phenomenal innovator.

As the project unfolds, the three companies will broaden and deepen their engineering base, building a joint R&D center at IBM in Austin, Texas, with initial development guided by 20 to 30 architects. Now that the Cell project has gone public, IBM is launching a recruiting drive, said Su, who earlier headed up a team working on 70-nm process technology development.

Kutaragi said the operating system for a global-scale, super-parallel processor network remains a huge hurdle. Ideally, the OS would be developed in an open environment, much as Linux has developed. It should be challenging and stimulating, as it is based on a new paradigm. It will be mankind's common property, so we want to invite wide participation.”

SCEI and other parts of the Sony group will use the processor for various consumer products. Toshiba also plans to use it for digital consumer products that connect to networks, such as home LANs. IBM's main aim will also be to emphasize consumer-oriented applications, Su said.

WASHINGTON — Cash-strapped Hyundai Electronic Industries Co. Ltd., which is plagued by the current crashing DRAM prices, today (March 14) told investors it has a highly profitable memory chip to help its bottom line — the venerable 16-megabit DRAM that now commands a small price premium.

Farhad Tabrizi, vice president of worldwide memory marketing, stressed that Hyundai, soon to be renamed Hynix Semiconductor, will continue to produce and support a wide family of 16-Mbit DRAMs for consumer electronics, communications and peripherals.
