Vicor announces the immediate availability of a through-hole packaging option for all V•I Chips including MIL-COTS. This is in addition to existing surface mount (SMT) compatible packaging, doubling the available range.

Through-hole products are electrically and thermally identical to the SMT versions and are compatible with both hand soldering and wave solder techniques so they are perfect for fast prototyping or large production runs. At its output, the DAQe-2501 version uses an 8-ksample DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with FIFO (first-in-first-out). Operating at 1-Msample/s speed, with a 20-V/µs slew rate, DAC resolution is 12 bits, and the system can generate DC-coupled 0-to-10-V signals, or bipolar ±10-V signals, driving up to 5-mA into a load. Settling time is 3-µs (to ±0.5 LSB [least significant bit] accuracy).

Its counterpart, the DAQe-2502 packs a larger 16-ksample FIFO-driven DAC. Both cards' bipolar or uni-polar analog outputs are entirely programmable on a per channel basis. Both flavors also use so-called scatter-gather DMA (direct memory access) for both analog inputs and outputs.

The system's bus mastering DMA makes best use of PCI bandwidth. A bus master controller controls the PCI bus when it becomes Master. This reduces the size of on-board memory, and reduces processor loading. Data is directly transferred to your PC's memory without CPU intervention.

Linking Non-Continuous Memory

However, if you're using a multi-user or multi-tasking operating system, such as Windows or Linux , it can be tough to allocate a large continuous memory block for DMA transfers.
